“We are who we choose to be!” NCSD Students Shine in 17th Annual Film Fest

We are who we choose to be. – Green Goblin (Spider-Man)

The 17th Annual Wyoming High School Short Film Fest was held April 29th, 2015. The student filmmakers were given free reign to create of a project of their choosing. With complete control over the screenplay, actors, editing, sound/music, directing and more, the students utilized film and cinematography lessons learned throughout the academic year. Individuality, design and creativity joined forces to inspire students into action with over 26 original student films submitted to the festival.

Student films were judged and constructively critiqued by industry professionals sponsored by NCSD Discover. Esteemed judges included a Hollywood production assistant, a film actor, a film location manager and more. Almost all of the industry professionals sharing in the talent of the film fest were prior NCHS graduates.

The student films were shown at the Fox III Theatre with over 140 community members and students in attendance at the sold-out event. The largest film showing ever, the theatre had to turn away over 50 guests. Winners were awarded scholarships to help fund film school or upcoming film projects.

The next day, over 120 people participated in the Film Fest workshops presented by the Film Fest judges that included inspiration, industry tips and tools…and most importantly…fun and laughter. When asked what his favorite moment from the Film Fest was NCHS teacher, Lance Madzey, said, “I took a lot away from the workshops and always learn a ton! A moment that stands out to me is when the kiddos got to play air guitar with one of the judges, Nordic Thunder! They are still talking about it and some of them even put together an air guitar band that is performing soon!”

“This sounds so cheesy but it’s the truth: stay true to yourself. Don’t care what anyone thinks about you. If what you’re doing isn’t hurting or harming anyone, continue to do it and enjoy life and get as much out of having fun as you possibly can.” ~ Justin Howard- Editing Judge
