The Tradition Keeps Growing: Park Elementary Celebrates Literacy with the help of Dr. Seuss

Park Elementary celebrated the birthday of Dr. Seuss with a week of fun activities supporting literacy for students, families and the community. As part of the Literacy Goal Team at Park Elementary teachers Nicole Dundas, Julie Pierantoni, Lindsey Wheeler, Janet Blackwelder, Lisa Wentz, Cindy Hill and Amanda Fischer, worked together to incorporate activities throughout the week to celebrate literacy.

Keeping up with tradition, Park Elementary kicked off the week of celebration with “Edible Book Night”. Parents, students, and staff provide the books which are made of cake. Park Elementary Principal, Dawn Dewald, said she is “impressed each year at the creativity and work that goes into making the books.” This year 19 cakes were auctioned off, along with the book inspiring the cake design, raising over $500.00 for Park Elementary. The funds will be used to purchase additional literacy support materials for the school.

“You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax. All you need is a book.” Dr. Seuss

Later in the week, Park Elementary hosted “Celebrity Readers” providing students the opportunity to connect with members of the community. Policemen, Firemen, NCSD Trustee Elizabeth Horsch, retired teachers, NCHS and KWHS students, musicians, and local businesspersons took time out of their day to visit Park Elementary and read a Dr. Seuss book of choice to the students.

The Literacy Goal Team works diligently throughout the year with all teachers and staff at Park Elementary to support their shared reading goal: “By May of 2019, 100% of our students will meet or exceed the expectations of the Wyoming School Accountability model in Reading as measured by PAWS results.”

Principal Dawn Dewald enjoys seeing the magic and inspiration the weeklong celebration brings to the school and students. It’s a tradition of fun and excellence at Park Elementary that will continue, “It is wonderful to see the students stare in amazement at the faces of the policemen and firemen as they read some of their favorite books. I was just asked at lunch if I would purchase the new Dr. Seuss book for our library when it is available.”
