A Helping Hand for the Holidays

Holiday Greetings! Even though it’s the first week of December, Christmas is fast approaching! Holidays are a joyous time of the year, but they can also be a very stressful time for many families. There are several organizations in our community that are taking donations of food and gifts for those who have a special need. If you are able to donate, please consider sharing what you are able. If your family has a special need at this holiday time here are some resources that might be of benefit to you.

The Mercer Family Resource Center is hosting the Elf Shop where kids can shop for their immediate families for free on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m Also visit with Santa and enjoy some cookies!

The YMCA presents a Winter Wonderland on Saturday, Dec. 7th from 5 to 8 p.m. Enjoy music, crafts, food and stories. Everyone welcome!

315 E 15th Street


The Salvation Army Hope Center is offering a free holiday meal on December 23rd from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. All are welcome!

441 S. Center Street (corner of Collins & Center Streets)


Families in need of gifts for their children can go to the Toys For Tots website at to fill out a family toy request form. Efforts will be made to fill all reasonable requests.


Families can also stop by the Salvation Army Hope Center and see Carol Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. to request a gift for a child or family member. Gift requests will be placed on the Salvation Army Angel Tree. Requests can be made for gift items for children under 16, any disabled individual, or the elderly.


If you or your family have a special need or if you would like to know of other community resources that can offer assistance for specific situations, please contact your school nurse.
