Cross Cultural “Bonds of Friendship”

  • kizunaKizuna (key-zu-na): Japanese word for “bonds of friendship.”

Twenty-four students and one teacher from Morioka City (Iwate Prefecture), Japan will be visiting Casper and Kelly Walsh High School this week.  This delegation is visiting Casper through the “Kizuna Project.”  The Laurasian Institue, in partnership with the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnerships, has undertaken a new project entitled Kizuna (Bonds of Friendship), which will provide fully funded two-week study tours to Japanese and American youth between June 2012 and March 2013.  One-thousand students from 40 U.S. high schools traveled to Japan in June and July of 2012.  Their program included: travel in Japan to both the Kanto and Kansai areas, an opportunity to volunteer in a community affected by the great East Japan earthquake of March 2011, and a host school visit.  Twenty-three KWHS students, along with teachers Kaoru Slotsve and Ben Schanck, participated in this once-in-a-lifetime experience last summer.

Schools who participated in the Kizuna trips have agreed to host a group of high school students from Japan for four days, three nights.  The Japanese delegation from Morioka City will arrive in Casper on Thursday, March 21 and depart on Sunday, March 24.  Kelly Walsh High School will host a welcoming party for these students within the Observation Deck of the Natrona County International Airport from 4:30 – 5:45 p.m..  We encourage you to join us in welcoming these special guests!  (Special thanks to Glen Januska & the staff at Natrona County International Airport for donating the space for free!)

The public will also have an opportunity to hear a special presentation from the Japanese students about their experiences during the great East Japan earthquake and the tsunami that followed.  They will also give a progress report on the progress being made in the clean up effort.  This presentation is scheduled for Friday, March 22 from 9:30 – 10:45 a.m. in the Kelly Walsh High School Auditorium.

For more information, please contact Ben Schanck or Kaoru Slotsve at 253-2000.
