Discover how our kids are being empowered to create their future!
It’s easy to encourage kids to read at home, but the real success comes when you involve the whole family. The Verda James Family Literacy Team, now in its third year of service, works toward its school and district goal of literate students, particularly to “partner with families to strengthen literacy skills for children from birth through grade 5.” The Verda team is made up of teachers, staff, and parents who meet once a month to plan, organize, and implement literacy projects. One of their biggest past projects was a Family Literacy Night (underwritten in part by many local businesses), with a plan to repeat this event every other year. On the alternate years (this year being the first), the team is organizing “Bingo for Books” — an evening of refreshments and family bingo with books as prizes.
In addition, the team implemented two before school events, “Donuts with Dads” was last fall. Moms get their chance with the upcoming “Muffins with Moms” on Feb. 1st at 7:30 a.m. These events invite fathers and mothers or significant adults in a child’s life to join them before school to share a story and a light refreshment. It’s a time to bond over a book. Hundreds of dads and father-figures showed up and the same is expected for the “mom” event.
Two additional ongoing projects include: Mother Goose Books, where the team furnishes and hand delivers a hardback copy of Mary Englebreit’s Mother Goose Favorites to incoming Verda James families with pre-school aged children and Storytime Fridays, a weekly storytime aimed at any Casper child, aged 0-5.
